it probably doesn’t matter whether or not you encode to 8-bit or 10-bit because the final encode will be viewed in nearly all cases on an 8-bit monitor, which means that the 10-bit encoding needs to somehow be mapped to an 8-bit display.
In order to display a true 10-bit image, you need a video card, drivers and monitor that support true 10-bit output. But most monitors only support 8-bit, some support a pseudo 10-bit output, and as far as I know there are no consumer tv’s that currently support 10-bit output.
good point. i don’t understand why pahe insist on overcomplicating and doing stuff like that. for example he always forces DD+7.1 on his encoding when the majority of downloaders here won’t be able to play that and don’t have the needed audio setups for it. just stick with the average needs of the users I’d say.
While most of people don’t have 7.1 set up, they still would get advantage from that. Clearer audio (encoded with official Dolby encoder) and for those who don’t have 7.1 setup the player will downscale it to stereo or 5.1.
People use 10-bit on HEVC mostly doesn’t have to do with monitor of anything, because it’s the default setting for the encoder. At least it can prevent or lessen the artifacts or blockiness in bitrate-starved encode like Pahe use. While using HEVC, just encode it in 10-bit instead, at least it has some improvement on quality compared to normal 8-bit. Even my old phone can play HEVC 10-bit, and it played flawlessly, so I can’t complained there.
I think that is so nice of you, Mr. Pahe. Only a man who loves sounds and music can understand it. By providing with 7.1 audios, he takes upon himself the burden so that a person with a similar set up can enjoy himself, with a 7.1. The one who does not has a home theater too can enjoy as the audio will be downscaled, therefore it is a win-win.

there are lots of users who preffered 10 bits,thats why pahe upload files in various format which suits everyone needs. My tv, my pc, my phone everything support 10 bit, lastest nextgen codec AV1 reduce its size comparison to hevc more smaller while keeping the quality intact, someday all people will use that too.

Because not everyone has good player specs, with what you did, it can easily tuning for the best audio option for multi device with multi spec : for all type Smart TV, all type Smartphone, PC, Laptop..
The source is 8-bit, not 10-bit. Also, anyone who wants to watch this series with 1080p quality and their device does not support 10-bit, cannot watch it with this quality, so in addition to 10-bit H264, it must be encoded so that almost everyone can watch it with 1080p quality. An interesting point is that many people talk about bit depth and support it, but they don’t know what it is.
