is DDP 5.1 Atmos better than DDP 7.1
If you have the system that can decode Atmos then yes, it’s better.
DD/DTS 5.1 = Channels are hard coded.
Atmos = 5.1/7.1 + some sounds and effects are coded to be in a specific location in the room relative to the listener. An Atmos reciever or soundbar will take that info, the calibration done when you set up the system. and accurately place the sounds where they need to be.
So a DD / DTS encoding, the sound mixer may put sounds in one of 5 or 7 speaker locations (or in between by using controlling the phasing and/or volume levels of that sound in each channel).
In an Atmos encoding, the sound mixer assigns certain sounds as “objects” and those objects are given coordinates and then your sound system tries to place the sound in the right location with the right phasing, delay, and loudness based on your speaker setup.
